Padma Shri awardee T. K. Lahiri allegedly assaulted at BHU hospital
Padma Shri awardee and retired cardiothoracic surgeon Prof. T. K. Lahiri was allegedly assaulted while receiving treatment at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) hospital. The patient's family has accused Associate Professor Dr. Arvind Pandey of verbally abusing and slapping the 85-year-old professor, resulting in facial injuries and a red eye.
In response to the allegations, BHU administration has constituted a medical board to investigate the incident. Uttar Pradesh Minister Ravindra Jaiswal visited the hospital to check on Prof. Lahiri's well-being and directed officials to ensure the highest standard of medical care without negligence.
BHU administration has issued a statement contesting the assault allegations. The university claims that Prof. Lahiri, who is suffering from heart disease, tuberculosis, and age-related cognitive issues including senile dementia, had to be “forcefully restrained” during cleaning procedures for his own safety and hygiene. The university maintains that no slapping occurred, but rather necessary physical restraint was used due to his behavioral changes.
