Bhubaneswar app-cab driver strike turns violent

A strike by app-based cab, auto-rickshaw, and bike-taxi drivers in Bhubaneswar turned violent on Wednesday, resulting in injuries to police personnel and significant damage to public property. Protesters, representing platforms such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido, have been conducting a cease-work protest since August 17 to demand a fare hike, lower application fees, and social security benefits.

During a rally from Raj Mahal Square, demonstrators blocked Mahatma Gandhi Marg, causing major traffic disruptions near the Bhubaneswar railway station and Master Canteen. The situation escalated when protesters allegedly pelted stones at police, injuring at least 13 officers, including a police station inspector in charge. Vandalism targeted police vans and more than 15 government-run Ama buses, with estimated repair costs reaching approximately ₹10 lakh.

Authorities have detained or arrested between 30 and 80 individuals and seized vehicles involved in the blockade. Police officials described the protest as illegal, noting that the agitation is directed at private companies rather than state authorities. The Capital Regional Transport Office (CRUT) condemned the vandalism, highlighting that the damage to the Ama Bus fleet disrupts essential mobility for over 3.5 lakh daily passengers.
