Bhupender Yadav reviews Great Indian Bustard conservation in Gujarat

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav reviewed conservation and habitat management efforts for the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard (GIB) in the Naliya region of Kachchh, Gujarat. During the visit, the Minister inaugurated a Soft Release Centre designed to facilitate the gradual adaptation of the species to its natural environment.

Key conservation milestones reported include the restoration of 11 square kilometers of grassland previously infested by the invasive species Prosopis juliflora and the installation of 30 kilometers of predator-proof fencing across 15 square kilometers. A significant biological breakthrough was noted through a ‘jump-start’ intervention, where viable eggs from a conservation breeding program were used to replace infertile eggs in the wild. A chick resulting from this effort has successfully survived its first three months in the wild.

To bolster field operations, Yadav flagged off 33 new patrolling and rescue vehicles for the Kachchh Forest Circle to assist in wildlife protection and rapid response. The Minister also emphasized the importance of community-led stewardship, engaging with local Jat Sumra and Darbar communities to ensure their participation in protecting the species and its landscape.
