Bhutan sets Guinness World Record with 108 chortens

Bhutan has established a Guinness World Record for the most stupas, or chortens, consecrated simultaneously across multiple venues. The event involved the consecration of 108 Jangchub Chortens in Gelephu Mindfulness City on November 1, 2026.

The structures, each 15 metres tall, were raised over a nine-hour period along the Mau Chhu river. The project involved trained teams and thousands of volunteers. The chortens form a corridor extending approximately 11.7 kilometres, with roughly 108 metres separating each structure.

As part of the ceremony, Chorten No. 76 was dedicated to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to recognize the friendship between Bhutan and India. King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Indian Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju unveiled the plaque for the dedication. Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude, describing the gesture as a symbol of the shared spiritual and civilisational heritage between the two nations.
