Bùi Thị Xuân: The only female Admiral in Vietnamese history

Bùi Thị Xuân was a prominent female general of the Tây Sơn movement in Vietnamese history. Born around 1758, she was trained in both literature and martial arts from a young age, specializing in staff and sword techniques.

Following her marriage to the renowned military leader Trần Quang Diệu, she became a key figure within the Tây Sơn forces. In 1778, after Nguyễn Nhạc ascended the throne, Bùi Thị Xuân was appointed as an Admiral (Đô đốc), making her the only female general to hold such a rank in feudal Vietnamese history.

A significant part of her military contribution involved the specialized training and command of war elephants. She managed a force of over 100 elephants, utilizing the social hierarchy of the herds—specifically focusing on older female elephants to lead the group—to ensure discipline. She also implemented training methods using drums and gongs to desensitize the animals to the chaotic sounds of the battlefield, ensuring they remained controllable during combat.
