Bialystok launches August commemorations of Jewish ghetto uprising
The Bialystok Cultural Centre organised a series of events on 1‑2 August to mark the anniversary of the Bialystok ghetto uprising. Activities include expert talks, workshops, a film screening and a concert aimed at preserving the city’s Jewish heritage.
Highlights feature a lecture by Krzysztof Bielawski on Jewish cemeteries, the unveiling of the restored tomb of Sora Zamenhof at the city’s Jewish cemetery, and the opening of a new cemetery wall and gates funded by the municipal government and the Nissenbaum Family Foundation. Dr Martyna Faustyna Zaniewska, director of the Cultural Centre, emphasized the importance of the "paper remembrance" initiative, while translations and historical insights were provided by Dr Heidi M. Szpek. The restoration work was carried out by artist Bartosz Markowski under the Bialystok Cemetery Restoration Fund.
