Bianchi seeks creditor protection amid 100 million euro debt
Bianchi, the 141-year-old Italian bicycle manufacturer, has entered a legal process in Italy to seek protection from creditors while undergoing financial and operational restructuring. The company faces approximately 100 million euros in debt, which includes 64.3 million euros owed to banks. Between 2023 and 2025, the manufacturer reported accumulated losses of roughly 28 million euros.
Interim CEO Tony Grimaldi attributed the crisis to excessive ambition, noting that the company invested heavily in too many areas simultaneously. These investments included building a new factory, launching new e-bike lines, and acquiring loss-making international distributors. These moves coincided with a downturn in the bicycle market and a period of oversupply following the pandemic-driven surge in demand.
The Bergamo court approved the request for protection on October 16, providing the company with temporary relief from creditor claims. Bianchi aims to reach new agreements with banks and suppliers by the end of January 2027, with a possible extension until late May 2027. The company stated that this procedure is intended to provide transparency and time to develop a sustainable financial plan rather than signaling bankruptcy or factory closures.
