Biathlon coaches in Italy and Austria outline new strategic directions
National biathlon coaches in Italy and Austria are outlining their strategic visions for the upcoming four-year Olympic cycle.
Italian head coach Klaus Höllrigl expressed confidence following a historically successful period for the Italian team. He noted that despite the departure of key athletes like Dorothea Wierer, the squad maintains top-level talent and a strong foundation built on recent World Cup successes and Olympic gold. Höllrigl emphasized that the next four years will serve as a measure of the program's ability to foster new talent and sustain growth.
In Austria, Wolfgang Pichler has returned to lead the national team with a mandate to overhaul the existing system. Describing himself as a ‘drill sergeant,’ Pichler intends to prioritize meritocracy to prevent older athletes from blocking opportunities for younger talent. He aims to implement a more aggressive development model, citing the need to integrate young athletes earlier in their careers to return Austria to the top tier of international biathlon competition.
