Bibbiena woman arrested for husband's death after knife incident

In Bibbiena, Arezzo, 59-year-old Maria Ricci has been arrested and charged with aggravated preterintentional homicide following the death of her husband, 70-year-old Giancarlo Bernardini. The incident occurred on September 18, when Bernardini died from blood loss after being struck in the leg with a hunting knife.

During questioning by a judge in Florence, Ricci claimed the stabbing was an accident. She stated that she found a large hunting knife in the kitchen and attempted to hide it in a drawer during a discussion with her husband. She maintains that the blade struck him unintentionally as they turned. While her defense suggests the charge could be downgraded to manslaughter if the accident is proven, investigators from the Carabinieri believe the wound was inflicted during a domestic dispute.

Separately, in Perugia, the Prosecutor's Office has ordered new technical assessments to determine the cause of an explosion that occurred on August 22 in a four-story building on via Giambattista Vico. The blast caused a partial roof collapse and resulted in the death of 47-year-old Federica Donati. Firefighters will conduct checks on the building's methane gas systems to investigate whether a gas leak was the cause.
