Bibury to install river fencing to protect environment from tourism
The village of Bibury, recently named the most beautiful village in the world by Forbes magazine, is planning to install fences along the River Coln to combat the negative impacts of mass tourism.
Local authorities report that during peak seasons, visitor numbers can reach up to 20,000 people per day, far exceeding the village's population of approximately 600. Residents and officials have noted that tourists frequently disturb the riverbanks by sitting in the water and setting up furniture, which threatens local wildlife including swans, ducks, voles, and trout.
Craig Chapman, chairman of the Bibury parish council, described the fencing as a “drastic measure” necessary to protect the environment. In addition to wildlife disruption, residents have reported significant issues with litter, such as beverage bottles and coffee cups, being left in the river. The council has approved the plan, though final implementation depends on securing formal funding.
