Bibury village faces crisis from extreme overtourism

The English village of Bibury, located in the Cotswolds, is experiencing severe social and logistical strain due to massive influxes of tourists. Despite having a permanent population of only 600 residents, the village receives up to 20,000 visitors per day during peak periods.

Following its designation by Forbes as the “most beautiful village in the world,” the community has reported what locals call “Disneyfication.” Residents have complained of extreme privacy violations, including tourists trespassing on private gardens for picnics, peering through windows to photograph interiors, and entering private properties for social media photos. Some visitors have reportedly treated the historic stone houses as stage sets, even questioning residents on how much they are paid to live in them.

Beyond privacy concerns, the surge in visitors has caused environmental and infrastructural issues. Large tour buses are creating traffic congestion in narrow streets, and there are concerns regarding the impact on the historic Swan Bridge and pollution in the River Coln. In response, the local council has commissioned a study from Oxford Brookes University to assess the village's carrying capacity and determine necessary infrastructure changes, such as external parking or visitor restrictions.
