Bicycle theft rises in the Netherlands during 2026
Bicycle theft in the Netherlands has seen a slight increase in 2026. Data from January to August shows 65,479 bicycles, mopeds, and scooters were stolen, representing a 1.56% rise compared to the same period in 2025.
Regional trends vary significantly. Vlissingen reported 262 thefts, an increase of 22 incidents over the previous year. Student cities have experienced the most substantial absolute increases, specifically Groningen, Utrecht, Delft, Maastricht, and Enschede. In contrast, theft rates in Amsterdam and Rotterdam have declined, though they remain the cities with the highest total numbers.
Seasonal patterns indicate that July is the peak month for bicycle theft. Experts note that while summer is a popular time for cycling, it also presents the highest risk for theft, emphasizing the importance of using approved locks.
