Bidirectional Charging Turns EVs into Revenue‑Generating Power Assets
Electric vehicles equipped with bidirectional charging can discharge stored energy to a home (Vehicle‑to‑Home) or back to the grid (Vehicle‑to‑Grid). A typical 60‑100 kWh battery can supply a household for two to three days, and owners can be remunerated for the energy they feed into the network, with pilot programmes reporting annual earnings from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars.
Automakers are already rolling out the technology. Ford introduced bidirectional capability on its F‑150 Lightning, while General Motors aims to make it standard across its electric lineup by 2026. Hyundai and Volkswagen are developing similar systems. The distributed storage potential of millions of EVs could help balance growing grid stress from AI data‑center loads, extreme weather and soaring air‑conditioning demand, as illustrated by the PJM grid in the United States.
