Poland's Biedronka launches pricey chanterelles; wild oyster mushrooms touted as superfood

Polish discount retailer Biedronka began selling fresh chanterelle (kurki) mushrooms at the start of June 2026. The 200‑gram packets are priced at 29.99 zł, equivalent to roughly 150 zł per kilogram, and are available only in selected stores. The high early‑season price reflects limited supply, with Biedronka noting that the peak season for the mushrooms runs from July to October and prices are expected to fall later in the year.

At the same time, foragers across Poland have reported abundant finds of oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) in forests such as the Puszcza Bukowa near Szczecin and areas around Mińsk Mazowiecki. Experts describe the mushrooms as a low‑calorie source of protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties, labeling them a “superfood.” While laboratory studies highlight potential health benefits, they are not considered a medical treatment.

Both developments highlight a growing interest in wild mushrooms in Poland, from retail promotion to nutrition‑focused foraging.
