Bielefeld District Court begins trial over systematic violence in disability facility

A trial has commenced at the Bielefeld District Court regarding allegations of systematic violence at a facility for people with disabilities in Bad Oeynhausen, Ostwestfalen. The indictment, spanning 367 pages, details nearly 200 alleged incidents occurring between 2014 and 2019.

Four defendants are facing trial: three facility managers, aged between 53 and 62, and a 73-year-old psychiatrist. The prosecution has charged the defendants with false imprisonment and dangerous bodily harm. Allegations include the use of tear gas against residents and the systematic use of restraints.

Prosecutors claim that management ordered staff to use excessive measures, such as locking residents in a 'Time-Out room' or in private rooms. The psychiatrist is accused of facilitating these measures by signing relevant documentation. The case has sparked significant political debate regarding the treatment of individuals with behavioral challenges and the oversight role of authorities.
