Bielefeld hosts National Pedestrian Congress to discuss urban mobility
The 6th National Pedestrian Congress (Fuko) is being held in Bielefeld, Germany, highlighting the growing importance of walking in urban mobility planning. Data from the 'Mobility in Germany' study indicates that more than one-quarter of all trips in Germany were made entirely on foot in 2023, a significant increase compared to 2017.
Discussions at the congress focus on integrating pedestrian interests alongside motorized traffic and public transport. Key topics include improving safety for the most vulnerable road users, addressing conflicts with e-scooters and pedelecs on sidewalks, and ensuring barrier-free access for people with disabilities.
Bielefeld is showcasing its own pedestrian strategy, which includes prioritizing safe school routes by restricting 'parent taxis' and reallocating space from cars to pedestrians. Inclusion activist Raúl Krauthausen emphasized the necessity of designing urban spaces that account for the perspectives of children and wheelchair users.
