Bielsko-Biała Mayor faces potential referendum over land sale dispute

A political dispute in Bielsko-Biała has escalated, with local groups announcing potential actions to trigger a referendum to remove Mayor Jarosław Klimaszewski from office. The immediate catalyst for the tension is the city's plan to sell municipal land plots located on Pileckiego Street.

Protestors, including the group Smrodek Bielsko, are demanding a complete withdrawal from the sale of these municipal properties rather than partial adjustments. Beyond the land dispute, the movement has cited a broader list of grievances against the current administration. These include the development of green spaces, the management of municipal companies, the appointment of officials within city-owned entities, and decisions regarding the relocation or closure of schools and kindergartens.

Critics argue that the Mayor has lost the necessary mandate of trust and that public consultations regarding major city matters have become merely superficial. The group has indicated they may seek support from opposition politicians if the referendum process proceeds.
