Hungary bus crash kills 12 Polish pilgrims

A Polish tourist bus overturned on the M3 motorway near Mezőkeresztes, Hungary, in the early hours of Sunday, August 16, 2026. The accident resulted in 12 deaths and left at least 10 people seriously injured, with dozens more sustaining minor injuries.

The vehicle, operated by the company 'Michael', was carrying 57 passengers and two drivers returning from a pilgrimage to Medjugorje. Preliminary investigations by Hungarian police suggest the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the bus to veer off the road and into a ditch.

One of the drivers has been taken into custody. Polish authorities, including Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and President Karol Nawrocki, have expressed deep sorrow and are coordinating with Hungarian officials. A Polish medical team has been dispatched to Hungary to assist victims and evaluate potential medical transfers to Poland.

In response to the tragedy, the Polish Infrastructure Minister has ordered an audit of the bus operator and requested nationwide inspections of passenger transport companies, focusing on vehicle technical condition and driver rest periods.
