Grojec parish priest removed following allegations of canonical violations

The Bielsko-Żywiecka Diocese has released details regarding the removal of Father Józef Zborek from his position as parish priest in Grojec. The decision, confirmed by the Vatican's Dicastery for the Clergy, follows a canonical process investigating serious irregularities.

The Diocese alleges that Father Zborek systematically violated canon law by accepting a mass number that far exceeded legal limits. According to the Curia, binated masses were a daily occurrence, and on Sundays, the priest reportedly celebrated up to six masses. The Church emphasized that such practices must be avoided to prevent even the appearance of trade regarding mass intentions.

Additionally, Father Zborek is accused of destroying church documentation. During a visitation in December 2023, he reportedly admitted to burning both the current mass intention book and records from previous years. While the priest argued that funds from these additional masses were used for parish works and local charity, the Diocese maintained that the destruction of these documents is a punishable offense.

The removal has caused significant local unrest. Parishioners, many of whom defend the priest's long-standing charitable work, staged protests that included blocking Bishop Roman Pindel from leaving the church, requiring police intervention. Despite his removal from office, Father Zborek remains a priest and has been offered opportunities for further ministry.
