Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla celebrates Pepe Marchena and musical heritage

The XXIV Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla is highlighting the complex legacy of Pepe Marchena, a central figure in flamenco history. The festival is revisiting the era of ‘Ópera Flamenca’—a period where the genre transitioned from small venues to large-scale public spectacles. By including Marchena as a primary reference, the Bienal aims to bridge the historical debate between traditional ‘jondo’ purity and creative freedom, allowing modern artists to reinterpret his influence.

In addition to historical tributes, the Bienal features contemporary performances such as ‘Herencia’ by the Parrilla brothers, Juan and Bernardo. Performing at the Teatro Alameda, the musicians integrated flute and violin into the flamenco tradition. The show included contributions from family members, such as nephew José Gato and son Manu Fernández, emphasizing the preservation and expansion of flamenco through generational heritage.
