Bienal de Yucatán to launch inaugural international art festival

The inaugural Bienal de Yucatán, an international contemporary art festival, is scheduled to run from November 26, 2026, to February 28, 2027. Led by artistic director Abraham Cruzvillegas, the first edition is titled ‘VOCAL’ and focuses on themes of language, idioms, and communication.

The event will feature 76 national and international artists across 16 venues located in the historic center of Mérida and the municipality of Maní. The central exhibition will include 38 new commissions, featuring 42 Mexican artists—including 18 from the region—and 34 international artists representing 20 different countries.

Designed as a long-term project, the Bienal is planned to hold subsequent editions in 2028 and 2030. The festival aims to utilize the cultural infrastructure of the Mexican Southeast, including museums, universities like the National University of the Arts of Yucatán, and various artist studios, to foster critical thinking and artistic experimentation.
