Bieszczady Mountains: Mother leaves children behind to summit peak

On October 17, 2026, a mother left her two young sons unattended in the Bieszczady Mountains in southeastern Poland to reach a nearby summit alone. The incident occurred in the Bukowe Berdo massif, approximately 1,311 meters high, during conditions of dense fog with visibility limited to a few meters.

A hiking group from the local PTTK Rzeszów branch discovered the children—an eight-year-old and a 14-year-old—crying and disoriented near a junction on the path to Muczne. The hikers intervened and assisted the boys until the mother returned. The incident gained public attention via a Facebook post from the PTTK tourism association, sparking widespread social media outrage regarding the mother's reported lack of remorse.
