Bietigheim horse market investigation follows pony abuse allegations

Authorities in the Ludwigsburg district are investigating allegations of animal cruelty following the traditional Bietigheim horse market held in early September. The investigation was prompted by video footage released by PETA, which appeared to show ponies under significant stress and being struck.

The veterinary office has confirmed that two specific incidents were identified in the footage, involving individuals striking a pony on the nostrils with their hands. Dr. Ulrich Koepsel, head of the veterinary office, classified this behavior as a violation of animal welfare laws. Administrative proceedings have been initiated against the two responsible parties, who are believed to be from outside the Ludwigsburg district.

While PETA has called for the event to be held without animals in the future, the city of Bietigheim-Bissingen stated that the misconduct of two handlers does not justify disqualifying the entire event, noting that hundreds of other participants acted appropriately. The city intends to advise the offenders to refrain from participating in future markets.
