Big Bash League to host historic first overseas match in Chennai
The Big Bash League (BBL) will host its first-ever regular-season match outside of Australia on December 12. The season opener for BBL 16 will take place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, featuring a matchup between the Perth Scorchers and the Melbourne Renegades.
Phil Rigby, the BBL Head of League Operations and Club Growth, clarified that the move is not intended to compete with the Indian Premier League (IPL). Instead, the league aims to provide an “authentic T20 experience” by showcasing its unique rules, such as the Power Surge and a new designated hitter/fielder rule.
Officials noted that Chennai was selected due to its passionate cricket fanbase and strong historical links with Australian cricket. While the focus remains on the success of this inaugural international fixture, the BBL expressed interest in ongoing discussions with the BCCI and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association to potentially host more overseas matches in the future.
