Big Bend border wall construction begins in West Texas

The Trump administration has commenced construction of the border wall in the Big Bend region of West Texas. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported that steel panel installation is underway in a 47-mile stretch of Hudspeth County, a segment known as Big Bend 1. This project is part of a broader $46 billion federal initiative to secure the U.S.-Mexico border using walls, barriers, roads, and surveillance technology.

CBP stated that the agency has doubled its construction pace, now averaging 12 miles of barrier per week along the southern border. This activity is distinct from infrastructure projects within Big Bend National Park, where construction remains temporarily suspended to allow for dialogue with local stakeholders.

The project faces significant opposition from a coalition of landowners, ranchers, environmental groups, and local businesses. Opponents argue the remote Big Bend region is not a high-traffic area for illegal immigration and have filed lawsuits challenging the administration's waiver of federal environmental laws. Some landowners have also expressed concerns regarding eminent domain and land access.
