Big Bend National Park border construction paused for evaluation FAST-MOVING

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Rodney Scott has announced a temporary suspension of all construction activity within Big Bend National Park. The pause comes as Scott travels to the Texas region to conduct an “on-the-ground evaluation” and meet with local law enforcement and community stakeholders.

The decision follows intense bipartisan criticism from residents, local businesses, and elected officials. Critics argue that the border security infrastructure—which includes patrol roads and vehicle barriers—threatens the park’s pristine desert ecosystem and that the region’s rugged terrain already serves as a natural deterrent to illegal crossings.

While the agency has stated it does not plan to build a 30-foot bollard wall within the national park or Big Bend Ranch State Park, contractors have already begun clearing land for patrol roads and vehicle barriers. The broader Big Bend security project includes plans for 175 miles of steel bollard wall west of the park and 165 miles of vehicle barriers to the east. The project is part of a larger $46 billion federal allocation for border wall construction.
