Big Brother housemate Omar El Meyer sparks Ofcom complaints
The ITV reality series Big Brother has faced significant backlash following an episode featuring tense interactions between housemates Omar El Meyer and Rhianna Collins. The broadcast, which aired on October 19, 2026, depicted the pair's relationship breakdown, during which Omar used aggressive language and dismissive remarks toward Rhianna.
Ofcom reported receiving 7,138 complaints regarding Omar's behavior, making it the most-complained-about broadcast in the recent reporting period. The regulator is currently assessing the complaints against broadcasting rules to determine if a formal investigation is required.
The controversy has drawn criticism from the charity Women’s Aid. Veronica Oakeshott, Head of External Affairs, stated that the show “risks presenting abuse as a form of entertainment” by providing a platform for coercive and controlling behaviors.
In response to the incident, Big Brother producers issued a warning to Omar in the Diary Room, noting that his behavior appeared to dismiss fellow housemates' feelings and could cause offense. ITV has stated that contestants are monitored 24 hours a day and have access to a dedicated welfare team.
