Nadara and Amazon complete Italy’s largest agrivoltaic plant in Sicily

Nadara, a UK-based independent power producer, has completed the Big Fish project in Sicily, which is recognized as Italy’s largest agrivoltaic facility. The 227 MW plant spans 400 hectares across the municipalities of Catania, Lentini, and Motta Sant’Anastasia.

The project utilizes an agrivoltaic design where solar panels are installed up to three meters high, allowing agricultural activities to continue on approximately half of the site. This setup includes the use of 14 wells for irrigation and is expected to support honey production through beehives. The facility was built over 12 months with the involvement of more than 900 workers.

Amazon has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for 156 MW of the plant’s capacity to support its carbon neutrality goals. Over its 35-year lifespan, the project is estimated to avoid approximately 3 million tons of CO2 emissions. Additionally, local municipalities are expected to receive at least €17.25 million for energy-efficiency services, including infrastructure upgrades, public building monitoring, and electric vehicles. Environmental mitigation efforts include planting 38,000 trees and maintaining 2.5 kilometers of public waterways.
