Big Sur wildfires burn over 54,000 acres, closing Highway 1

Two major wildfires, the Plaskett and Timber fires, are burning in California’s Big Sur region, consuming a combined total of over 54,000 acres. The Plaskett Fire, located in southern Monterey County, has grown rapidly to approximately 29,000 acres with only 1% containment. Firefighters face challenges due to steep terrain and heavy vegetation, particularly as the blaze pushes toward Fort Hunter-Liggett.

The Timber Fire, situated about 25 miles north, has burned roughly 25,000 acres and reached approximately 23% containment. While the Timber Fire has stabilized somewhat due to cooler temperatures and higher humidity, the Plaskett Fire continues to present a significant threat.

The fires have caused major disruptions to local infrastructure, including the closure of sections of Highway 1, which has isolated some residents and cut off travel between the Bay Area and Los Angeles. Between 1,000 and 1,200 people in Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties have been subject to rolling evacuation orders or warnings. Authorities have indicated that some evacuation orders may soon be downgraded as weather conditions moderate.
