Big Sur wildfires threaten Highway 1 as Plaskett Fire grows

A second wildfire, known as the Plaskett Fire, is growing rapidly in the Big Sur region of Monterey County, California. As of Friday night, the blaze had burned approximately 5,924 acres with zero containment. The fire is moving toward Highway 1, specifically south of Plaskett Ridge Road, prompting increased fire activity and new evacuation orders and warnings.

Cal Fire officials noted that red flag weather conditions and dropping humidity have contributed to the rapid growth of the Plaskett Fire. The California Highway Patrol has adjusted closures on Highway 1, which is currently shut from the Little Sur River in the north to Gorda in the south.

The region is also managing the Timber Fire, which has been burning since August 8. The Timber Fire has consumed about 23,300 acres and is currently at 21% containment. Approximately 1,600 personnel are assigned to the Timber Fire, while 180 personnel are working on the Plaskett Fire.
