Big Sur wildfires trigger evacuations and Highway 1 closures

Two wildfires are burning along the Big Sur coast in Monterey County, California, prompting new evacuations and the closure of sections of Highway 1.

The Timber Fire, which has been active since August 8, has grown to over 23,000 acres, making it the third-largest wildfire in California this year. It is approximately 21% to 23% contained. Firefighters are utilizing backburning operations and drones to establish containment lines in steep, rugged terrain. The fire has threatened over 660 structures and prompted multiple evacuation orders and warnings.

Simultaneously, the Plaskett Fire erupted on Wednesday in a remote area about 30 miles south of the Timber Fire. The Plaskett Fire has burned approximately 140 acres and remains uncontained. This newer blaze has also triggered evacuation orders for local residents and threatened several structures.

Weather conditions remain challenging, with red flag warnings issued due to gusty winds and low humidity. The closures on Highway 1 are intended to allow emergency crews to position equipment and conduct firefighting operations safely.
