AI Infrastructure: Hyperscalers face massive spending and revenue hurdles

Major technology companies are undertaking massive capital expenditures to build artificial intelligence infrastructure. Hyperscalers, including Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta, and Oracle, are driving significant investment. Alphabet expects to spend between $175 billion and $185 billion in 2026, while Microsoft anticipates approximately $190 billion in capital expenditures for the same year. Morgan Stanley projects that total hyperscaler capital spending could reach $1.4 trillion by 2028.

Financial analysts have raised concerns regarding the sustainability of this spending. Goldman Sachs suggests that hyperscalers may need to generate roughly $300 billion in annual AI revenue to break even on their investments. Additionally, there is a growing economic squeeze as the market price for AI services declines while the costs of building the necessary hardware and infrastructure remain high.

Other market risks are also emerging, including high levels of leverage. U.S. customer securities margin debt reached $1.502 trillion in June 2026. Meanwhile, despite U.S. national security restrictions, Wall Street banks continue to facilitate significant technology financing in China, acting as bookrunners for $17.2 billion in high-tech equity offerings this year.
