Big Tech companies increase spending in California legislative races

Tech companies, including Google and Meta, account for at least 20% of all contributions made to outside groups spending on California legislative races, according to a CalMatters analysis of campaign finance disclosures.

Industry representatives state that the spending is intended to protect innovation from regulations that could stifle the sector, particularly regarding artificial intelligence and data center legislation. Critics, however, argue the significant financial involvement is an attempt to influence the California Legislature.

Total spending for California Assembly and Senate races rose to over $128 million this year, up from $74.2 million in 2022. Major donors to independent expenditure groups include Google, Meta, Uber, Sergey Brin, and Chris Larsen. Unlike direct candidate donations, independent expenditures for advertising and mail are not subject to state spending limits.
