Big Tech Firms Account for Over Half of the S&P 500 Index
Technology companies now represent more than 50% of the S&P 500 when sectors such as information technology, consumer discretionary and communications are combined. The information‑technology sector alone holds a record‑high weight of about 39%, surpassing levels seen during the dot‑com bubble. Adding firms like Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Netflix raises the collective share of the so‑called "Big Tech" to roughly half of the index.
The rise is driven largely by growth in artificial‑intelligence‑related revenue streams, cloud computing, semiconductors and data‑center services. Analysts note that this concentration increases the influence of a small group of stocks on overall market performance and raises questions about diversification and risk for index‑linked investors.
