Big Ten football faces widespread quarterback instability

The backup quarterback position has become a critical factor across the Big Ten conference this season. Approximately half of the 18 teams in the conference may rely on second-string quarterbacks this weekend due to various injuries and roster challenges.

High-ranking programs including second-ranked Ohio State and No. 7 UCLA are currently managing quarterback injuries. Other teams facing decision-making processes or roster shifts include Michigan, Rutgers, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Oregon, and Washington.

Ohio State coach Ryan Day noted that roster construction changes driven by the transfer portal and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rules have made maintaining a stable quarterback room more difficult. For the upcoming game against Southern California, Ohio State is deciding between Luke Fahey and Tavien St. Clair to start following an injury to Julian Sayin.
