Big W reports profit turnaround amid Woolworths strategic review

Australian discount retailer Big W has reported a $64 million profit in its latest financial year, marking a recovery after sinking to a $33 million loss in the 2025 financial year. The turnaround is attributed to reduced discounting, improved clothing sales, and a growing marketplace business.

Despite the recent profit, Big W continues to trail its primary competitor, Kmart, which maintains over 300 stores and generates more than $1 billion in annual profit. Big W currently operates 178 stores, roughly half the size of Kmart’s national footprint following 30 store closures announced in 2019.

The retailer’s future remains a subject of speculation following comments from Woolworths Group CEO Amanda Bardwell. In early 2025, Bardwell announced a strategic review of the company’s business portfolio, leading to discussions regarding a potential sale or exit of the Big W brand.
