Bigbank urges Lithuanian savers to split accounts for better budgeting

Bigbank released a statement warning that a large balance shown in a digital banking app can blur the line between everyday spending and long‑term savings. The bank recommends creating practical and psychological limits by keeping daily expenses in one account and reserving separate savings accounts, with automatic transfers on payday and clearly defined goals.

Edvardas Arnatkevičius, head of the Customer Relations Management department at Bigbank Lithuania, said that many people cannot tell how much they can actually spend until the next paycheck because the app displays both daily money and months of saved funds. He noted that “Dažnas žmogus nežino, kiek tiksliai gali išleisti iki kito atlyginimo, nes sąskaitoje kartu mato ir kasdienius pinigus, ir kelis mėnesius kauptas santaupas.”

Research cited by the bank indicates that keeping savings in separate accounts can strengthen self‑control and improve financial well‑being, while a single aggregated balance often leads to overspending on items such as meals, gadgets or weekend trips.
