Bihać officials struggle to contain Plješevica wildfires

In Bihać, Bosnia and Herzegovina, officials are struggling to contain a wildfire on Plješevica. Mayor Elvedin Sedić reported that the situation remains volatile due to wind conditions that cause underground fires to flare up unpredictably.

The terrain is difficult to access and partially affected by landmines. While the fire is currently burning through beech forests rather than pine, Sedić noted that human forces alone cannot fully extinguish the blaze and that rainfall is necessary for complete containment.

Local firefighting units are currently operating with personnel shortages, as the Bihać formation lacks approximately eight firefighters required to meet regulatory standards. Efforts continue to prevent the fire from spreading further.
