Vaishali boat tragedy: 13 children killed in Ganga river capsize

At least 13 children, aged 15 or younger, died after a boat capsized in the Ganga river in Bihar's Vaishali district on Tuesday night. The vessel was carrying between 15 and 20 passengers, mostly children, who were traveling to attend a feast and festival in a neighboring village near Rampur Shyamchand.

Rescue operations involving the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local residents resulted in the rescue of seven people. The survivors were transported to Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) in Patna, where they are reported to be in stable condition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased person, along with Rs 50,000 for those injured. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased.

Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav has called for a high-level investigation, questioning the boat's condition and the speed of the emergency response. Local residents alleged that the boat was in poor condition and overcrowded, noting that previous complaints regarding its safety had gone unaddressed.
