Bihar CM Samrat Choudhary advocates for Ganga water rights
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has called for the state to secure its rightful share of Ganga water to support agricultural, industrial, and drinking water needs. Speaking at a seminar titled ‘Ganga Water Treaty: Water Security of Bihar’, Choudhary emphasized that water resources must be utilized as assets for economic development.
Choudhary highlighted the importance of addressing Ganga water-sharing and the Farakka agreement. He also noted that a long-standing dispute with Jharkhand regarding the Sone river water has been resolved through the intervention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, resulting in Bihar securing a 75 per cent share.
To support infrastructure, the Chief Minister announced plans to sign an agreement with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to promote the scientific use of silt from the Ganga and other rivers. He further suggested conducting an aerial survey to assess river flow patterns and silt accumulation, while calling for stronger Ganga embankments to aid economic goals.
