Vinay Kumar retires as Bihar DGP to become Chief Information Commissioner

Vinay Kumar, the Director General of Police (DGP) for Bihar, has taken voluntary retirement (VRS) from the Indian Police Service. A 1991-batch IPS officer, Kumar applied for retirement on September 25, 2026, following a period of leave taken for health reasons. The state government’s Home Department approved his request with immediate effect, waiving the standard three-month notice period.

Following his retirement, Kumar has been appointed as the new Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of Bihar. This decision was reached during a meeting involving Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary, and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav to address vacancies in the State Information Commission. Additionally, senior IPS officer Anjani Kumar Singh has been appointed as a State Information Commissioner.

In the interim, senior IPS officer Preeta Verma, who had been holding additional charge during Kumar’s medical leave, is expected to continue in her capacity or until further orders are issued.
