Bihar government increases medical faculty pay and student stipends

The Bihar government has announced significant increases in remuneration for medical professionals and stipends for postgraduate students within state-run medical institutions.

For contractual faculty, monthly honoraria are being revised: professors will see an increase from Rs 1.80 lakh to Rs 2.07 lakh, associate professors from Rs 1.35 lakh to Rs 1.55 lakh, and assistant professors from Rs 1.10 lakh to Rs 1.25 lakh. Additionally, senior residents and tutors will receive Rs 1.15 lakh, while junior residents' monthly pay rises from Rs 65,000 to Rs 75,000. These changes are effective retrospectively from September 1, 2026.

Postgraduate medical and dental students will also receive higher monthly stipends. First-year students will receive Rs 92,800 (up from Rs 82,000), second-year students Rs 1,02,000 (up from Rs 90,200), and third-year students Rs 1,12,200 (up from Rs 99,220). These revised rates are effective retrospectively from January 1, 2026.

Health Minister Nishant Kumar stated that these measures aim to strengthen the healthcare and medical education systems by attracting and retaining qualified human resources and encouraging future specialist doctors.
