Bihar PhD researchers protest recruitment reforms in Patna
PhD holders and research scholars in Bihar have entered their 18th day of protest in Patna, demanding significant reforms to the state’s higher education and recruitment systems. On Saturday, demonstrators attempted to march toward Lok Bhawan but were intercepted by police near the R-Block area, where barricades were erected to prevent further movement.
The All PhD Holders and Research Scholars Association of Bihar is seeking the implementation of the UGC Regulations 2018, specifically Table 3A, in the recruitment of assistant professors. Other key demands include increasing the maximum age limit for recruitment to 55 years, ensuring permanent and regular appointments, establishing an effective domicile policy, and protecting the autonomy of universities.
Association Convener Kumud Patel has been participating in an indefinite hunger strike to pressure the government, reporting worsening health as the agitation continues. Protesters state the movement aims to secure the academic future and dignity of qualified youth in the state. The Bihar Jan Suraaj Party has expressed support for the researchers' demands.
