Jamui harassment case: Police arrest three after viral video of student molestation
A viral video showing the harassment and molestation of two Class 10 students in Jamui, Bihar, has triggered widespread political outrage and a major police investigation. The incident occurred on the evening of September 19 on the Jamui-Lakhisarai road, where a group of men intercepted the students while they were traveling on a scooter.
Jamui Police have arrested three suspects and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to lead the probe. Authorities have identified approximately seven to eight individuals potentially involved and are conducting raids to make further arrests. Legal charges have been filed under the POCSO Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
In response to the video's circulation, police have also taken action against 32 social media accounts for sharing the footage without blurring the faces of the minors, citing violations of the Juvenile Justice Act. The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of the case, directing the Bihar Director General of Police to ensure immediate arrests and provide support to the victims.
Politically, the incident has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders. Rahul Gandhi condemned the act as a manifestation of patriarchy and questioned the state government's ability to ensure the safety of women on public roads after dark.
