Bihar to mandate computer education and launch AI teacher training
The Bihar government plans to make computer education compulsory for students from Class 6 onwards in all government schools starting the next academic session. Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari announced the initiative during a departmental review, noting that the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) will oversee teacher training to prepare for the rollout.
To support this digital transition, the Bihar Education Department has partnered with 11 information technology companies, including Google Education, to provide training in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies for government schoolteachers. The training program, which aims to be in place by January, will be conducted in batches at the SCERT campus. School principals will nominate teachers for the sessions, which will receive support from the Union government’s skill development department.
Additionally, the state has set a March 31, 2027, deadline to introduce smart classrooms in 700 Saraswati Vidya Niketan model schools. Following this initial phase, the government intends to expand smart classroom facilities to other government schools in stages. The state also plans to provide AI training to faculty members at state universities and constituent colleges to assist with academic tasks such as lecture planning and evaluation.
