Biju Janata Dal calls for mass protest in Odisha over mining laws
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has called for a mass protest in Odisha to demand the repeal of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026. The party plans to gather in front of the Legislative Assembly on September 28, with BJD President and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expected to address the crowd.
The BJD alleges the Amendment Act undermines state rights over mines and mineral-bearing land. Party spokesperson Lenin Mohanty stated that the legislation prevents the state from accessing significant revenue, claiming that a Supreme Court order from July 2024 had previously allowed states to levy taxes and recover dues retrospectively from 2005. The party estimates this could have resulted in Rs 1 lakh crore in arrears and Rs 12,000 crore in increased revenue for Odisha.
