Biju Janata Dal files complaint over deepfake videos targeting Sujata Rout

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) opposition party has filed a police complaint in Bhubaneswar regarding the circulation of AI-generated deepfake and voice-cloned videos targeting senior leader and former bureaucrat Sujata Rout Karthikeyan.

According to the complaint submitted by BJD leader Amrita Mishra at the Capital Police Station, the videos were distributed via a social media account named ‘Odianka Chhata’ on Instagram and Facebook. One specific video allegedly used artificial intelligence to falsely depict Karthikeyan threatening the Principal of Kendrapara Autonomous College regarding student union elections.

The BJD alleges the content was manufactured to mislead the public, create discord, and damage Karthikeyan’s reputation. The party has called for the registration of an FIR, a thorough forensic investigation to trace the operators, and legal action against those responsible. They also requested that police seek relevant information from Meta Platforms through lawful procedures to prevent further circulation of the material.
