Poland credit market sees record mortgage demand and rising consumer debt

Poland is experiencing significant shifts in its credit and debt landscape. According to BIK data, mortgage demand saw a substantial rise in July 2026, with the value of mortgage inquiries increasing by 22% year-on-year. The average requested mortgage amount reached a record 538.5 thousand PLN. This demand is accompanied by varying creditworthiness levels; while singles and childless couples have seen improved credit capacity due to relaxed bank criteria, families with children have experienced a decline for three consecutive months.

On the debt side, the total value of Polish consumer debt fell slightly to 28.46 billion PLN, but the average debt per consumer has risen by over 700 PLN year-on-year, exceeding 22.7 thousand PLN. Experts warn that rising individual debt levels may indicate households are struggling with the cost of living. Additionally, farmer debt in the National Debt Register (KRD) decreased slightly to 238.3 million PLN, though experts remain cautious as the number of debtors remains relatively stable and average debt per farmer remains high.

In the digital sector, Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) manages a 650 million EUR pool for digitalization. However, reports suggest a need for a 'digital sovereignty test' to ensure public funds support secure and controlled technological infrastructure.
