The bikini marks 80 years since its debut in Paris on July 5, 1946. Created by engineer Louis Réard and modeled by dancer Micheline Bernardini, the garment was named to evoke the explosive impact of the atomic bomb tests conducted by the US military at Bikini Atoll.

Initially, the design caused significant social scandal. Post-war moral standards dictated more conservative attire, and many critics were outraged by the amount of exposed skin. Early fashion publications like Vogue approached the trend with caution, and there were even social pressures to ensure the navel remained covered.

The garment's popularity surged in the 1950s and 1960s, propelled by icons such as Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe, and Ursula Andress. Over the decades, the bikini transitioned from a controversial scandal to a global fashion staple, becoming a symbol of women's social and sexual liberation.
