Bilbao Airport faces naming dispute while Vueling expands operations

The name of Bilbao Airport has become a flashpoint in Basque politics, with the PNV and regional leader Iñigo Urkullu invoking former lehendakari Juan José Agirre to argue over historical memory and regional identity. The debate turns the airport from a transport hub into a symbolic arena for competing narratives about the Basque Country’s past and future.

At the same time, low‑cost carrier Vueling unveiled its eighth aircraft based at the airport, raising its local workforce from 156 to 186. Director Jordi Pla said, “Bilbao is a tourist destination and a social‑economic muscle,” noting the airline’s annual contribution of roughly €600 million to the Basque GDP and the creation of about 8,000 direct and indirect jobs. Vueling expects further destination and frequency growth, reinforcing Bilbao’s role as its second‑most important base after Barcelona.
